Come indulge in delicious local food and wine at AfriCamps at Stanford Hills. This camp is set on a boutique wine farm in Stanford, an exciting slow food destination with chefs serving an array of fresh and locally produced food. We have 5 luxury tents situated on the foothills of the Klein River Mountain range overlooking a dam and the Stanford Valley. This foodie delight is only a fifteen minute drive from Hermanus and can be reached from Cape Town in two hours.

Stanford Hills Estate is fast becoming one of the area’s most popular attractions. Aside from offering tastings and sales of our award-winning range of wines there are a variety of other activities and attractions. The restaurant, The Tasting Room, is set above a dam with endless views over the Stanford Valley. The restaurant has a reputation for laid back fun, with the emphasis on fresh and inventive food of an exceptionally high standard. The chalkboard menu changes daily according to what is locally fresh and available, including items from  our own vegetable garden. The farm also produces Proteas and Pincushions, which are endemic to South Africa. So, from July through November the farm is filled with these colourful blooms. The farm offers horse-riding, hiking and even whale-watching by air in a small airplane which takes off from the farm’s private landing strip. You can also have a swim in a farm dam, try your hand at fishing, or simply lie in bed and listen to the birds.

The charming town of Stanford is overlooked by the Klein River Mountains. It is famous for it’s award winning eateries and has an eclectic mix of art galleries, breweries and wine farms, all with fantastic views of this valley area. Stanford is in close proximity to Hermanus, considered as one of the best whale watching destinations in the world. This is also a treat for the adventurous types, as there are mountain bike trails, horse riding, shark cage diving and boat cruises, all within the area.

Your Hosts

Peter and Jami Kastner are the owner-managers, who live on the farm with their two young boys, Jack and Alex (winemakers-in-training). Peter owned a restaurant and Jami a flower export company before 2005, when they sold up and invested with their family into what was then a portion of Weltevrede Farm, with four hectares of Pinotage for small production and one self-catering cottage for rental. Today the estate is known as Stanford Hills, with 6 wine labels exported to 11 countries, a 100 seater restaurant and accommodation for 57 people. The farm is also a popular venue for weddings and hosts a variety of fun events and outdoor music events including their winter craft beer festival and the Stanford Stumble in November.

Peter has no formal wine training, but has learnt on the job, with what he describes as a pretty steep learning curve! He does most work by hand in the small cellar set in one half of an aircraft hangar on the farm, and believes in minimum interference to allow the grapes to express their own unique characteristics. He believes in the quality of the grapes, which are slow ripening due to the cool sea breezes in the area and carefully managed to give optimum yield. As he says “It’s possible to make a bad wine from good grapes, but there is no way you can make good wine if your grapes aren’t up to scratch.”

Jami manages The Tasting Room, the estate restaurant, where the kids often help out too. She is a published author of Sam and Me and the Hard Pear Tree, published by Jacana, and has recently opened The Butterfly Centre in Stanford. This centre is a non-profit organization offering a variety of beneficial activities for children in the area with special needs.
